Morgan LangeSeptember 16, 2018 Comments (16)

Apple TV users may encounter the following error when trying to make a purchase from their device:

Verification required – Before you can make purchases, you must go to the iTunes store on your computer and verify your payment information.

You can usually solve this problem with these steps:

Option 1

  1. From any computer, open a web browser visit the Apple Store.
  2. Select the person icon located toward the upper-right corner of the screen, then select “View Account“.
  3. In the “Account Settings” area, select “Change your default shipping or billing info“.
  4. Type your Apple Store username and password.
  5. Select the “Edit” button next to the “Payment Information” area.
  6. Re-enter your credit card information and be sure to include your “Security Code“.
  7. Select “Save“.

Try to purchase an item from your Apple TV.

Option 2

  1. Open iTunes from any computer.
  2. Select “iTunes Store“.
  3. Select your account name in the upper-right corner, then choose “Account Info“.
  4. Sign into your Apple account if prompted.
  5. Select the “Edit” button next to “Payment Type“.
  6. Re-enter your credit card information. Be sure to enter a “Security Code“. Select “Done“.

Attempt to purchase an item from the Apple TV.

Note: Some users have reported that making a purchase from the iTunes Store fixes this problem. If these steps don’t work, try to purchase any song for 69 cents. You may be prompted to enter your payment information. Once completed, the problem should be resolved.

Option 1&2 did not work but I followed Henrik’s advice & it worked. Thanks Henrik.

I have tried to verify my payment 3x and have switched off and on and it still tells me to “verify payment” when trying to rent movies etc. What do I do now???

Henrik’s advice worked for me! I couldn’t find a solution up until now. THANK YOU HENRIK!!!

This is still not working for me. Have tried updating payment info at every possible source. Trying to do it via appleid site, as per previous advice, and it says can’t be done at this time. Is this still an issue for anyone else? I can purchase songs etc on my macbook, but not through the apple tv.

Trying to buy 4 songs each time it said entry code sent to email. The code showed up on my text messages (this happened after all 4 songs) but I couldn’t find anywhere to enter the code? I give up. By the way I never use to have to enter a code to verify my acc . I’m using a new iPhone 10s I got for Christmas.

Tried option 1 and 2 and neither worked. I followed Henrik’s advice and visited https://appleid.apple.com/ and that fixed the issue once I updated my payment info from there. Thanks Henrik!!

Could not fix this from Apple Store but addressed the problem via AppleID, as per Henrick’s suggestion.

I was unable to resolve with option 1 or 2… Then there’s option 3 make a purchase, which is what I am trying to do in the first place, so it will not work either. I can make purchase from my Living Room AppleTV, My MAC and my iPhone but not the Bedroom AppleTV. It wants a verification code from PayPal, why doesn’t this work? This can’t be that complicated! From what I can tell I will most likely have to reset my AppleTV.

I didn’t get it to work with your solution, but then I changed the same details on https://appleid.apple.com/ and then it worked!

Thanks a lot, only option 3 “making a purchase” worked for me.

I also tried option 1 and 2 and both seemed to fail. The only solution I found was removing the credit card info in order to enable the Apple balance from a previously redeemed gift card.

I recently changed my iTunes method of payment from PayPal to a new card. The only thing that resolved this issue was restoring the device to its factory settings and then reloading all the information…

I basically did option 1 and 2 and both seemed to fail. The odd thing is that I could buy stuff on my computer, but not on my Apple TV. After many attempt I found the issue: make sure you DON’T have the full Zip code in your billing address, just the 5 digit version.

Option 2 worked, but only after restarting my AppleTV.

Option 1 didn’t work for me but Option 2 did.
