Fix “You Are Not Authorized to Use This Device” on ChromeOS

Try Again Later

The good news is that Chromebook authorization errors usually go away on their own after five or ten minutes. Restart your computer, wait for ten minutes, and then try to log in again. If the problem persists, contact your IT admin.

Reset Chromebook Hardware

Try resetting your hardware and check if the error persists.

  1. Turn off your Chromebook.
  2. Then press and hold the Refresh and Power keys.power-and-refresh-keys-chromebook
  3. Release the Refresh key when your laptop starts up.
  4. Restart your Chromebook and try to log in again.

Specific Chromebook models require removing the power adapter and battery to reset the hardware. Shut your laptop down, remove the power adapter and battery, and wait for thirty seconds. Then reconnect the power adapter and battery. Boot up your device and check if you’re still getting authorization errors.

Check If There’s Any Problem with the Device Registration

This error could indicate there’s a problem with the device registration to your domain. Open the Admin Console and check the device registration details.

Navigate to Device Management, and select Chrome Devices. You should now see the serial numbers of the devices registered to your domain. Additionally, ensure your domain is entered correctly. Check for any typos.

Check if there are any incorrect device settings. Go to Device Management, select Chrome, click on Advanced Settings, and then select Device Settings.

Conclusion

Chromebook authorization errors pop up from time to time, but they should go away on their own. If ChromeOS still says that you’re not authorized to use the device, reset Chromebook hardware and contact your IT admin. Chances are there’s a problem with the device registration.

Did you manage to solve this problem yourself, or did you have to contact your IT admin? Let us know in the comments below.
