How to Enable or Disable Background Data on Android

The following steps apply whether you want to turn this feature on or off. To start, open the Settings app on your Android device and go to Network and Internet. Select Mobile network, followed by App data usage. Here, you will see a list of all the apps. The apps listed first will be the ones that use the highest amount of data. Depending on your installed apps, this list can be very long.

Enable or Disable Background Data

Let’s say you want to turn off Background Data. Tap on the app to which you wish to apply this and toggle off or on the Background Data option. Remember that if you prevent messaging apps from running in the background, you won’t get your messages unless you open the app. You will need to do this for every app you want to restrict data usage for.

Enable or Disable Background Data

To restrict background data for all apps but add a few to the exception list, you must go to Settings > Network and Internet > Advanced > Data Saver. Toggle the option on or off at the top. There will also be an Unrestricted data option where you can toggle on apps you want to give full access to, even if you have Data Saver on. Tap this option to view the complete list and toggle on the desired app.

How to Enable or Disable Background Data on Samsung Phones

The steps for Samsung phones are slightly different. You must open the Settings app and go to Connections > Sata Usage > Mobile Data Usage. Choose an app you want to turn on or off Background Data, and that’s all there is to it.

Enable or Disable Background Data

This is a great way to know which app is using too much mobile data. But you can also have your Android device let you know when you’ve reached a limit on how much mobile data you’ve used. You can do this by going to Settings > Network and Internet > Mobile Network > Data warning and limit > Toggle on Set data warning, and under Data warning, set the limit.

Yahoo uses a lot of visible background data with adds changing while my yahoo email is logged in. Seems every time I use yahoo my mail has a notification from ads displayed in yahoo.com that scroll and change behind foreground data that other people are using.

I have a new RCA Viking Pro10 Android Tablet with Marshmallow 6.0. It does not show the selections as shown above. When I select “data usage” and click on the drop down menu, it only shows “network restrictions”. I select that and it only shows Metered Wi-FI networks with only one option which is to select metered wi-fi connections. The menu only shows network restrictions and no other menu options to turn off background data. I contacted RCA about this and they said to download an app that can force restrictions. Big Help :P

I have a Samsung Galaxy S5 and have gone into the settings, then to data, and Restricted Background Data. I rarely leave my home and have Wifi. But often when I have set my phone down for a while then when I come back to it, when I pick it up I notice the “4G”, then it immediately switches back to “you are now connected to wifi” and pulling down the tools from the top I find the mobile data has TURNED ITSELF on. I have US Cellular, and also think they are doing this to try to send me over my data limit. Don’t understand how possibly the Mobile data can turn itself on when background data is restricted. But ALWAYS turns itself on when phone is NOT in use, then signals to connect back to wifi when I handle phone again. This stops for about 2-3 days after I call US Cellular Customer service to complain, then starts up again. I will not take in to store as I cannot trust as they charged me a $100 “deposit” for an upgrade that should have cost a penny, and it took 6 months and my local tv news to get it back.
