You’ll notice how your computer struggles when you run too many apps on your Windows 11 computer. You may hear things such as your fan getting older, among other things. You can try various things to lighten your computer’s load, such as closing any software you don’t need anymore, but you can also use Efficiency Mode, which was introduced in the Windows 11 update 22H2. It’ll help redirect resources to more important tasks for a smooth user experience.

What is Efficiency Mode in Windows 11

Efficiency Mode is meant to help you save battery life and lower the energy you use. This feature is included in the Sustainable Software inventiveness that Microsoft created. This feature will reduce your CPU’s stress and improve the thermal experience. The feature will limit the CPU usage of what you’re not using at the time. When Efficiency Mode is on, EcoQoS is applied. This is a process that makes your computer more power-efficient.

How to Enable Efficiency Mode in Windows 11

To enable Efficiency Mode, you’ll need to enable the Task Manager. There are various ways you can do that. For example, right-click the Windows Start icon and choose Task Manager.

You can also search for it in the search bar or press the Ctrl + Shift + Esc keys. One more keyboard shortcut you can use is Ctrl + Alt +Delete. Once it’s open, you can see which app uses the most resources by clicking on the CPU column. Find the app that uses the most resources and select it. You’ll notice that the Efficiency Mode option at the top right will light up. When you click on the option, you’ll see a new window warning that it can cause instability for specific processes. If you want to continue, click the Turn on the Efficiency Mode button. Another way to enable it would be to right-click on the task and choose the Efficiency Mode option from the list of options.

You’ll know that Efficiency Mode has been applied since you’ll now see a leaf icon in the Status column. Microsoft Edge uses this mode by default, so if you open the browser, you’ll see the icon without doing anything. If you choose an option at the Efficiency Mode button that does not light up, it may be a core Windows service/app. Or that it’s a process group that is an app that is considered several processes, so you can’t use Efficiency Mode on it as one task. But, if you click on the app, it’ll show you all the processes, and if you right-click on one or more of them, you’ll be able to apply Efficiency Mode.

How to Disable Efficiency Mode in Windows 11

To turn Efficiency Mode off, you’ll need to follow the steps you took to enable it.

  • Open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc)
  • Click on the Task you want to apply Efficiency Mode on
  • Click on the Efficiency Mode button at the top right

Remember, you can also right-click on the task and select it again. It’ll have a check mark, but by selecting it again, you disable it.

Chu: Thanks for responding …. I have wasted too much time on this problem … Also no viable solution found yet.

Drove me nuts trying to understand: Other terrible quirk is that Win 11 FORCES your UserName to be the first FIVE letters of your eMail address. …. As suggested on the internet, I created a new USER for MyName. That messed up the operating system.
