You should feel safe as you interact with your online audience. Having the assurance that only those who you want to view your information will see it will give you peace of mind. These are some of the Facebook privacy features that you can use to your advantage:

Timeline and tagging

This feature enables you to control what will go to your timeline and whether your friends will see it on their News Feed. When a friend tags you on a photo or post, the information will be viewed by those on their friend list and yours too. However, by making your choice after you click on the Timeline and tagging setting and selecting your preference on ‘Who can see things on my timeline?’, you can control the privacy of such posts. Alternatively, you can request the friend that uploaded the images to not tag you or update their photo or album privacy settings to limit who can view the uploaded photo(s).

Selected Friend list

In Facebook terms, a friend is generally a person who has sent a request to you and you confirmed, thereby adding them to your friend list. However, not everyone on your friend list may be known to you personally. Also, your colleagues and people in your professional circles need not have too much detail into your social life. Therefore, you need to have more privacy when it comes to the information that they should view. You can do this by updating your friend list. You can create a segment of your preferred friend list by going to your profile and clicking on Friends and selecting ‘New List’. The thing with Facebook is that it would like to have your information available. You’re already used to the question ‘What’s on your mind?’. Also, on your profile, it is required that you provide private information such as where you live, your hometown, your birthday, phone number and email address, as well as marital status. However, this information need not be accessible to all. Therefore, you can edit your profile information by editing the settings under ‘General Account Settings’ and on your ‘My About Page’ section.
