What Are BZ2 Files?

File Header

BZ2 is short for BZIP2 and is a type of compressed file. These files are almost exclusively used in Unix-based computer systems, where they are used to distribute software. They are used to compress files that don’t normally allow it, such as TAR files, or archives that already contain compressed file types. Each BZ2 file can only contain one other file.

How can you open BZ2 files?

Almost all decompression programs can open BZ2 files, though they are unlikely to be found outside of a Unix system. There are also online services available that allow the opening of BZ2 archives. As with all archives, the contents of it will need to be opened with the appropriate software for those filetypes.

What programs work with BZ2 files?

Programs like WinZip, Bee’s Archiver, The Unarchiver, PeaZip, WinZip and the like can all be used to open these files. Additionally, things like the B1 Online Archiver site allow users to open this filetype without needing to install any additional software on their machine.
